Rules

It is important to follow the rules of the class in order to ensure a safe, productive learning environment.  The rules are:

1.  Respect yourself, your peers, and your teachers.

2.  Take responsibility for your actions.

3.  Raise your hand to share information.  Don't talk when others are sharing.

4.  Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

5.  Be prepared for class.

If you consistently follow these rules, you will be successful and be rewarded with a V.I.W.

WHAT IS A V.I.W. ?

A V.I.W. is a reward that you can recieve for following rules, being a good citizen, or doing a favor for someone.  Any teacher in the whole school can award you with these little purple papers.  When you get one, you need to drop it in the box outside the office for our weekly drawings and quarterly assemblies.  This will give you a chance to win a prize.  The prizes range from school T-shirts, to $25 Best Buy gift cards.  There are so many winners that if you have multiple V.I.Ws in the drawing, your chances are grand of winning something.  Good Luck!

Language Arts and Literature Curriculum

In sixth grade, language arts and literature are blocked meaning that you will have two periods designated to this subject.  Therefore, one will focus on language arts and one will focus on literature.  What will you learn?  Read on to find out.

LITERATURE

You will read a variety of stories from different genres this year.  While reading, you will have to practice using the reading strategies.  I will model these at first, and then you will have to show that you are profieicient at using them by answering a variety of questions and completing projects.

This year the novel study is geared toward, Tuck Everlasting.  This is in the genre of fantasy and it is filled with lots of figurative language as well as plot twists and turns.  Look forward to great discussions while reading.

LANGUAGE ARTS

We will learn all about the parts of speech and sentence parts in the grammar portion of this fun filled class.

Vocabulary development consists of a workbook that focuses on latin roots and base words.  Within the lesson you will be asked to work with synonyms, antonyms, analogies, sentence completion, riddles as well as other fun activies.

This year will also be writing intensive.  We will be writing narratives, persuasives, and expositiories.  Peer tutoring is a great way to learn to read critically and give valuable feedback.  During writing workshop, there will be mini lessons designed around the type of paper we are writing as well as the section we are focusing on at the time.  Be prepared for your creative mind to really work during this portion of class.

Remember to have have, ask questions, and be engaged!
